| Fourth of July Festivities - Posted Wednesday, July 01, 2009Happy Fourth!
We will be having a kids parade at 6:00 PM with decorated bikes, wagons etc. through the streets of the Village.
We will also have an evening gathering at the pavilion to enjoy each other's company and watch some fireworks as in past years. Hopefully, this year we can have many of our neighbors from the Preserve join the Villagers for this happening.
Both events will be primarily BYO, with a limited HOA sponsorship of plates, cups, napkins etc.
The evening event will begin at 6:30 at the Village pavilion.
See you there!

| Disposal of TVs after June 12th - Posted Friday, June 12, 2009MARC News
Pass on to your constituents. Go green when TV goes digital
Feb. 10, 2009
On June 12, 2009, broadcast television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting only in digital. Despite this significant change, most consumers will not need to purchase a new television set, but can receive broadcasting signals by purchasing a converter box that will sit atop their older TVs.
For consumers who are considering replacing their television sets during the digital transition, electronics recycling is a safe, environmentally friendly way to dispose of old TVs.
"Older televisions contain hazardous substances such as lead and flame retardants," says Matt Riggs, Outreach Coordinator for the MARC Solid Waste Management District. "These substances can leach into our waterways and harm people and the environment when disposed of improperly. That's why we always recommend recycling."
Electronics recycling (or "e-cycling") offers several benefits:
- Protects health: Electronics can contain toxic chemicals such as lead, mercury, and flame retardants. Properly reusing or recycling electronics prevents dangerous materials from potentially hurting our health.
- Environmental protection: E-cycling recovers valuable materials (precious and other metals, plastics and glass) from old electronics that can be used to make new products. Recycling these materials reduces greenhouse gas emissions, saves energy, extends the life of landfills and intelligently uses resources by extracting fewer raw materials from the earth.
- Local job creation: Recycling electronics creates jobs for recyclers and refurbishers and creates new markets for the valuable components. As the demand for electronics recycling grows, so will the need for new e-cycling businesses; existing recycling companies will need to hire more staff to meet the increasing workload.
Residents can recycle old televisions at the following area locations:
- AVC Recovery Systems, 33 Skyline Drive, Adrian, Mo. 64720, (913) 219-4900
- Best Buy – Starting Feb. 15, consumers can bring up to two televisions per day, per household, for recycling at any U.S. Best Buy store. Best Buy will accept most consumer electronics, including televisions and monitors up to 32". For more information, visit www.bestbuy.com.
- Electronic Disposal Technologies, Inc., 525 W. 9th St., Kansas City, Mo. 64101, (816) 210-3015
- Forerunner Recycling, 8240 E. Bannister Rd., Kansas City, Mo. 64138, (816) 807-5454
- Office Depot (smaller televisions only) – For more information visit www.officedepot.com, click on 'Our Services and Tech Recycling.'
- The Surplus Exchange, 518 Santa Fe, Kansas City, Mo. 64105, (816) 472-0444
Each of these organizations also recycles a wide variety of other electronics, including computers. A complete list of electronics recyclers in the Kansas City metro area is available at www.recyclespot.org.
For more information on the digital changeover and details on how to obtain a converter box, visit www.DTV.gov or call 1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322). For more information on recycling opportunities, visit www.RecycleSpot.org or call (816) 474-8326.

| Dreamscape Makeover 2009 Contest - Posted Friday, June 12, 2009Dreamscape Makeover 2009- Win $10,000 of sustainable landscaping!
Keep Kansas City Beautiful announces the second annual Dreamscape Makeover, an entry contest to win $10,000 of sustainable landscaping. If you win, you could help create a sustainable environment while making your home or organization more beautiful! Our lucky winner will win a landscape design, materials and installation contributed by our partners. The second prize winner will bring home 2 rain barrels to harvest storm water at home!
Why sustainable landscaping? A sustainable garden features indigenous and drought-resistant plants that thrive despite the temperature swings, high winds and uneven rainfalls in our region. These gardens conserve natural resources, create and attractive environment and require minimal fertilizer, pesticides and water.
The roots of native plants can go as deep as 20 feet into the soil, allowing rain water to penetrate the soil and maintain groundwater levels. Pollutants from run-off water are filtered on site. Storm water that is harvested through a native landscape helps prevent overflows of combined sewer/storm water systems, thus preventing the overflow of sewage into our rivers. Disconnecting your downspout to fill a rain barrel conserves water and reduces your utility bill. Sustainable gardens attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and produce unique beauty your neighbors would envy.
Keep Kansas City Beautiful offered the first Dreamscape Makeover in 2008, an entry contest available to residents of Kansas and Missouri throughout the Metro area. Winner Nancy Mohr of Kansas City, Missouri received the grand prize that transformed her front, side, and back yard into a beautiful oasis. In her words, “It was a once in a lifetime amazing experience: from being able to have a voice in the architect's plans, to enjoying the end result.....I admire everything in my year and am still in awe!
How do you enter to win the Dreamscape Makeover 2009 contest? Get a ticket request online at www.kkcb.org, or call us at 816-561-1086. We suggest a donation of $25 per ticket, or 5 tickets for $100. Your donation will support KKCB’s beautification program. Only 1500 tickets are available through July 1. Download and mail in your request form with the suggested, tax-deductible donation, and we’ll send your tickets!
Many thanks go to our partners for their generous contributions. Our lucky winner will work with Michael Ashley and Assoc. Landscape Architecture to create a custom design. Materials and installation are contributed by Audrie Seeley & Co., Family Tree Nursery, Prairie and Wetland Center, Missouri Organic, House of Rocks, and Aggrand EcoFertilizer.
Ticket distribution is limited to the counties of Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte in Missouri, and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. No purchase necessary. A complete list of all rules governing the entry contest can be found at www.kkcb.org.

| Results from the 1st Annual Groundhog Tournament - Posted Monday, June 08, 2009Click here to see the results from our first annual Groundhog 2-person Scramble Golf Tournament at Shoal Creek Golf Course.
We had a decent turnout of 14 golfers for the event. The quality of the golf was varied – except where my partner Scott T. and I were concerned since we were consistently bad! Vic Nigro and his brother Tom won the bragging rights for the next 365 days by shooting 74, which I believe might be less than Vic’s age. The Nigro boys squeaked by the neighbor pair of Jan Kuhlmann and Jim Buckler, who shot 74 and missed a playoff when both watched their short putt on 18 slide by the hole.
Mark your calendars for the first Saturday in June as the date for all future Groundhog tourneys. Next year’s date is Saturday, June 5th. You have been warned.
